TAQAT: Part One

NADIA AWAD

TaQat is a two-part project exploring the complex relationship between queer activism and aesthetic practices and the question of Palestine–its cultural and political location in the West and its meanings for Palestinians. The first part of the project is a web documentary, chronicling the experience and aftermath of the first LGBT delegation to Palestine. In January 2012, fifteen LGBT activists, lawyers, cultural producers, and community leaders embarked on a solidarity delegation to Palestine. They met with leading Palestinian queer activists. This delegation was the first of its kind. Awad shot in multiple formats, using archival footage, and digital technologies. Production was completed in November 2012. The web documentary will be available online.

Pop-Up Museum of Queer History

HUGH RYAN

In 2014, The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History was delighted to work with author Sassafras Lowrey, The New York Public Library, and the Lambda Literary Foundation to create the first Queer Book Diorama show, in which queer people were asked to create physical representations of books that were important in the development of their queer identity. Our Founding Director, Hugh Ryan, presented on queer history at a variety of locations and schools, including at a national conference for museum professionals in Sweden. We are now working on creating a guidebook / how-to to enable queer communities around the world to create their own Pop-Up Museums of Queer History.

Kathleen and Eddie

DESIREENA ALMORADIE

KATHLEEN & EDDIE is a feature-length, work-in-progress documentary about how one woman transforms the grief and trauma of her brother’s murder into compassion for the perpetrators. In 1985, Kathleen’s older brother Eddie, an American soldier stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, was killed by the Red Army Faction, a left-wing terrorist group responsible for the fiercest domestic conflict in the history of postwar Germany. Two women, Birgit Hogefeld and Eva Haule, were imprisoned for his murder. Decades after his death, Kathleen travels to Germany to find closure by seeking out these two women.

Smokey Belles

ANIE STANLEY

A lawless camp for artists, Smokey Belles operates in the storied tradition of creative colonies removed from urban centers. The Catskills retreat offers a supportive work atmosphere, allowing visitors to realize their own goals while fostering a connection to nature. The Charming 2-bedroom sits on 4 acres of bucolic land facing a river. Sliding scale & work shares are available.

The homestead was founded by Anie “S8″ Stanley, a long time East Village resident, whose avant-garde Super 8 films have been programmed alongside Bruce La Bruce, Sadie Benning, and Kenneth Anger, most notably at the Whitney and at the MOMA.
